Ves Wordtamer
Description

Vesram Gotrekson Rhynkaraz Wordtamer is a young (mid 20s) male dwarven scholar.
Ves wears a leather overcoat, festooned with all manor of scrolls, writing implements, and measuring implements. He has a fine red-brown beard for such a young dwarf, and a stocky frame characteristic if his clan.
Ves's name translates to "Vesram the Tamer of Words, son of Gotrek, of the Redstone Mountain clan".
Role and Affiliations
Ves was the patron of the voyage to the ๐Lost Fleet, and also:
- Ship: The Lucrator, a dwarven shoal-class trade barge. Ves inherited the vessel from his grandfather and was the patron aboard ship.
- Faction : The ๐ซAcademy Cognitus. Ves was a graduate student at the ๐ขOrhaz academy of Applied Archaeology.
- Family : Ves is the cousin of ๐นGreeco Substath. Ves is the son of ๐นGotrek Twicemeasure, grandson of Kazgar Harokson, great-grandson of ๐นHarok Flangebender. Unknown to Ves he is a descendant of the Ganden Baraz and therefore the Stout Mechanicus.
- Clan : Ves is a member of the Rhynkaraz dwarven clan, who hail from the red mountain region of central Keshtine. A number of Rhynkaraz dwarves emigrated to ๐ขOrhaz many generations ago.
Personality and Motivations
Ves is a struggling dwarven student of history at the ๐ขOrhaz Academy Cognitus.
Through a staggering set of coincidences, the senior researchers of the Guild of the Heart send Ves a large box of fragments and instructions to โturn in a detailed report by the end of the year or forfeit your scholarshipโ.
Ves knows nothing about his great grandfather (Harok Flangebender), other than what he believes is a parable told to him by his grand aunt about a mighty fleet that was lost.
Through months of dedicated research, including numerous trips to the grand libraries of Ezdin, Ves pieced together what he believed to be the fate of the Lost Fleet. As much a fool he is, Ves advertised across Orhaz for a captain willing to mount a paid research expedition (โHuge Opportunity! Get your name on a jetstream!โ).
Ves is motivated by pleasing his father (Gotrek Twicemeasure), which he thinks will come by becoming a successful academy graduate. Ves is also motivated by proving to the academy critics that his theory about the lost fleet is correct.
Possessions and Gear
- A cheap but well loved set of clothing, breeches, tunic and leather apron.
- An extensive set of field archology tools, including writing and measuring equipment.
- A large, but low-value and old, collection of historical texts.
- A somewhat well endowed coin purse.
At points in the story, Ves was also the owner of:
- A run-down warehouse in the dregs of ๐ขOrhaz. The warehouse was abandoned after being attacked by members of the Cohors Tertia Anexus (third cohort) of the โ๏ธ14th Legionius Ferrum ("The Steel Legion") during ๐Book 2 - The Lost Fleet.
- Derelict, a sordalite-golem and family heirloom. Derelict was destroyed by during the attack on the warehouse.
- The Lucrator, a shoal-class dwarven trade barge, also a family heirloom. The Lucrator was crewed by our heroes, flown to a lost island, nearly destroyed, "repaired" by ๐นSpanners, and ultimately reclaimed back from Ves in disgrace by his clan.
Hands of Fate
Signs and portents are the life-blood of Sordane. Like all beings adrift on the floating sphere, Ves is subject to the forces of destiny.
Ves's Divine Tarot is "The Hermit" - his destiny represents introspection, seeking knowledge and the pursuit of wisdom.
Ves's true role in the Hands of Fate as yet remains to be seen, however he has played a pivotal role in:
- Connecting our heroes with ancient past events, in particular introducing them to the Ganden Baraz and therefore the Stout Mechanicus.
- Allowing our heroes to discover the fate of the ๐Lost Fleet and in particular that of ๐นHadra Kettleson.
- Allowing ๐นLyra du Vectari to remember her history as an Odarii fighter pilot during the Construct War
- Putting them on course that allowed them to retrieve the Brynduraz ("Bright Stone")
- Allowing them to understand the machinations of the โ๏ธ14th Legionius Ferrum ("The Steel Legion").
Divine Tarot : The Hermit
Wisdom and Enlightenment: The hermit's lantern lights the way, but only a few steps ahead, indicating that the journey of self-discovery is gradual and requires patience.
Spiritual Journey: The hermit represents the values of undertaking a spiritual journey in a more literal sense - to journey across the world in search of deep values.
Story
Background
Ves was born in 3845 PR in the city of ๐ขOrhaz to Gortrek Twicemeasure, a senior engineering tutor at the Orhaz Schola Magistrorum, and Derna Proudpipe, a tobacconist shopkeeper.
Ves was always a lover of history and stories, particularly those of his grand aunt. As young dwarf in his early 30's he enrolled in the ๐ขOrhaz branch of the Academy Cognitus, in the school of Applied Archaeology.
Ves was a poor student and was nearing expulsion when Magister Aplus, a senior member of the Academy Cognitius Archaeological Museum in Ezdin, sent him remnants of the Lost Fleet and charged him with "producing a worthwhile research paper by summer or be expelled from the academy".
In 10 years of subsequent study, Ves pieced together a working theory on the fate of the Lost Fleet, including that it was destroyed and the likely location of an associated wildstream. Desperate to preserve his place at the academy, Ves hatched a plan to prove his theory.
