Honoris Ad Astra ("Honour to the Stars")
Spoken by every member of the Legionius Nauticus upon induction.
My ship is my legion; my legion is my family.
By the stars above and the earth below,
I pledge my heart, my hands, and my honour.
I am the sword and shield of the skies,
The bulwark of Cin'Dar, ever vigilant.
To my captain, I give my obedience;
To my crew, I give my loyalty;
To my ship, I give my body.
To the skies, I give my soul.
In war, I shall be fierce;
In peace, I shall stand guard.
For the Senate and the people of Cin'Dar,
I swear to serve with pride.
Honoris Ad Astra!

Unlike the Legionius Aurelius, the Legionius Nauticus has a greater degree of political independence from the ⚖️Cin'Dar Senate. This is somewhat due to the incredible power of the navy and the desire by the ⚖️Cin'Dar Senate to ensure that no one House has political dominance. This is also due to the strength of the agencies within the navy, including the naval branch of the Academy Primilitus (which trains its leadership) and the Nauticus Academy (which controls its policy, administration, development, logistics and tactics).

Beliefs and Culture
The Legionius Nauticus is deeply rooted in a culture of discipline, honour, and loyalty. Much like the Legionius Aurelius, the Legionius Nauticus has strong traditions that shape the identity and ethos of its officers and sailors. Operating massive, technologically advanced sky ships, they are the embodiment of the Republic’s might in the skies. Below are the key aspects of their culture and core tenets:
Discipline and Order
- "A ship is a legion; a legion is a family" — The phrase is a core belief that the well-being of the ship, its crew, and their mission is tied to the collective strength and discipline of every individual. Each member of the Legionius Nauticus is expected to perform their role with precision, keeping the ship in perfect harmony.
- Strict hierarchies and clear command structures are vital. Orders from superiors are followed without question, as even the smallest misstep in coordination can spell disaster aboard a sky ship.
Honor in Service
- Serving in the Legionius Nauticus is seen as the ultimate expression of devotion to the Republic. Skyship crews take great pride in their service, often tracing their family’s military heritage through generations of naval duty.
- Honoris Ad Astra ("Honor to the Stars") is the fleet's motto, reminding every sailor that their service in the skies reflects directly upon their honour and the reputation of the Republic.
Loyalty to the Republic
- Above all, loyalty to the Republic of Cin'Dar is the foundation of their culture. Every sailor and officer is trained to value the collective good of the Republic above personal ambitions. This loyalty extends to their comrades, as betrayal within the ranks is the gravest sin, punishable by death or exile.
- Loyalty is tested in trials of hardship and battle, with promotions often coming not from politics but proven dedication to the Republic’s cause.
Traditions of the Ancient Legions
- The Legionius Nauticus is steeped in traditions that mirror the ancient ground-based legions of Cin'Dar. From their uniforms to their ranks, the force maintains Roman-inspired practices such as the Oath of Allegiance, where every new sailor swears a binding vow to the Republic, their commander, and the ship they serve on.
- Skyship Command Rituals: Upon the commissioning of every new skyship, a ceremony is performed where a silver eagle figurehead, a symbol of the Republic, is mounted on the ship's bow. This eagle signifies the protection and watchful eye of the Senate over the vessel and its crew.
The Cult of the Skyships
- Skyships are considered nearly sacred vessels, and the Master Engineers who build and maintain them are treated with reverence. To the sailors of the Legionius Nauticus, the sky ship is more than just a military asset—it is a living extension of the Republic's will.
- Each ship is given a unique name that ties it to the heroic myths or legendary battles of Cin'Dar’s past, and the death of a sky ship in battle is mourned almost as deeply as the loss of a commander or unit.
Arcane and Technological Excellence
- The Legionius Nauticus prides itself on its fusion of cutting-edge steam-powered technology with arcane enchantments. Sky ships are equipped with enchanted sails, shields, and weaponry, making them not just machines of war but arcane fortresses.
- The fleet's Arcane Navigators, specially trained in both the arcane arts and naval warfare, are respected as much as any seasoned commander. They are responsible for charting courses through dangerous magical currents in the skies.
Expansion and Protection of the Republic
- The core mission of the Legionius Nauticus is twofold: Expand the Republic’s influence by securing the skies and Protect the Republic's borders from foreign threats. This has led to a culture of conquest and defense, with skyships seen as the embodiment of Cin'Dar’s dominance.
- Crews of the Nauticus have a sense of destiny, often believing that they are the Republic’s hand in bringing order to the skies, subduing rogue nations, and enforcing Cin'Dar’s rule from the heavens.
Legacy of the Sky
- Every ship in the fleet keeps an Ancestors’ Log, a meticulous record of every mission, victory, and loss endured by the vessel. This log, stored within the ship’s Tome of the Stars, is regularly read aloud to the crew, fostering a deep connection to the skyship’s past and inspiring sailors to uphold its legacy.
- Veterans of the Nauticus are often invited to write their final thoughts and lessons in the Ancestors' Log upon retirement or death, giving new recruits guidance and the weight of history.
Resilience in Adversity
- The philosophy of Unyielding Resolve is central to the Legionius Nauticus. No matter how dire the situation, crews are expected to maintain their composure and fight to the last. Surrender is not an option; retreat is only considered if it serves the greater strategy of the Republic.
- Stories of legendary captains who fought on even as their sky ships crumbled into the clouds are told with great admiration, reinforcing the idea that to die in battle is the highest honour.
The Sky Trials
- Upon reaching certain milestones in their career, sailors and officers undergo the Sky Trials—a series of mental, physical, and arcane challenges designed to prove their worth. Passing these trials earns one a higher rank or position aboard a vessel.
- The most respected leaders in the Legionius Nauticus are those who have faced the Trial of Tempests, a dangerous mission where a ship navigates the chaotic magical storms of Sordane’s atmosphere. Completion of this mission, without losing ship or crew, is a badge of honor that guarantees lifelong respect.
The Legionius Nauticus embodies the militaristic and expansionist spirit of Cin'Dar, but it does so with the discipline, honor, and loyalty passed down from centuries of naval tradition. With their eyes on the stars and their hands on the wheel, they believe that the skies belong to the Republic, and it is their sacred duty to secure them.
Religion
The Legionius Nauticus is a secular body, but has some religious relationships - primarily operational in nature:
- The Legionius Nauticus has the second highest number of trained war-clerics (corpsman) within its ranks, behind that of the Legionius Aurelius, totalling some 500 corpsman in active service (approximately 1 corpsman to 150 personnel).
- The Nauticus Academy dictates medical operational matters for the Legionius Nauticus and hires trained corpsman from House Celestia. The relationship between the academy and the blessed house is steeped in deep traditional ties.
- Ordained priests of House Celestia may request passage aboard a Legionius Nauticus vessel that is not on an active military mission.
- Many legionnaires of the Legionius Nauticus offer prayers to 🙏Liladan - Elder Goddess of Creation and the Sky, 🙏Marret - Goddess of the Sun and Travel, and 🙏Estara - Goddess of War and Death.
Appearance

The banner of the Legionius Nauticus, flying over the barracks in 🏢Orhaz.
The uniform of the Legionius Nauticus is predominantly composed of rich navy blue, symbolizing the vastness of the sea and the empire's maritime prowess. The tunic, trousers, and cloak or cape, where applicable, are all crafted from this deep hue. This colour choice represents the empire's strong affiliation with the sea, the sky and its commitment to naval dominance.
Other distinct elements of the uniform are:
- Naval Tunic: The core component of the uniform is a fitted tunic made of navy blue fabric, often adorned with golden or silver trim along the edges. The tunic features a high collar and short sleeves, providing ease of movement for naval personnel.
- Embellished insignia: The tunic bears intricate insignia, denoting the rank and branch of service. Golden or silver embroidery, reminiscent of nautical motifs, adorns the collar, cuffs, and hemline of the uniform. The rank insignia includes symbols such as anchors, ships, or waves.
- Trim and accents: To accentuate the regal and prestigious nature of the Cin'Dar navy, golden or silver trim is meticulously woven along the edges of the tunic, cuffs, collar, and hemline. This metallic adornment adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to the uniform, catching the light and symbolizing the empire's wealth and power.
- Rank insignia: The rank insignia and embellishments on the uniform, including buttons and buckles, are often crafted from brass or gilded metal. These metallic accents provide a striking contrast against the navy blue fabric, symbolizing the empire's maritime achievements and incorporating the steampunk aesthetic.
- Belt and buckle: A wide belt, often made of sturdy leather or intricately tooled metal, is worn around the waist. The belt features a prominent buckle, bearing the emblem of the Cin'Dar navy—a design incorporating nautical elements such as ship wheels, dragons, or stylized clouds.
- Trousers and boots: Crisp, well-tailored trousers in a matching navy blue shade accompany the uniform. These trousers are designed for ease of movement, allowing sailors to perform their duties onboard ships. Polished leather boots, reaching mid-calf, offer durability and a touch of military elegance.
- Functional accessories: Sailors don accessories essential for their naval tasks. This includes gloves to maintain dexterity while handling ropes, pulleys, and other equipment. A weathered, wide-brimmed hat, adorned with feathers or brass insignia, shields sailors from the elements while adding a distinctive flair.
- Cloak or cape: For officers and higher-ranking personnel, a flowing cloak or cape in rich navy blue or deep crimson hues adds a regal touch. The cloak is embellished with ornate clasps or brooches, displaying the rank and branch insignia.
- Academy graduates: Graduates of the Academy Primilitus are entitled (and expected) to wear a distinctive braided cord aiguillette as part of their uniform, a gold braided cord with spike-like silver metal tips. Such devices identify the wearer as one who would “risk the (hangman's) rope of the enemy to stand in defiance and bravery for the valour of the republic” and be relied on to never surrender and never dishonour the republic even in pain of death. Further each graduate is provided with a ring upon which is the Primilitus Seal, annotated with their monogram, for the purposes of sealing orders and rulings.

History
The Legionius Nauticus is nearly as old as the republic itself, and has its roots in the wet navy:
- Myth has it that the kingdom of Cin'Dar was originally formed alongside the other nations of Bordair more than 10,000 years ago by Kan’Tahri, one the seven brothers of the Kanthu family, an ancient Aurian elf clan.
- Before the discovery of soralite, in the early days of sail, the kingdom maintained a modest traditional navy, principally a coastal defence fleet, made up of small shallow-water galleys.
- With the discovery and early use of soralite, Cin'Dar mage-smiths became particularly proficient in using it for primitive sky-ships. The sky based navy was initially a part of the wet navy, although it eventually expanded in to huge size as soralite warships were used by all nations to secure ongoing access to the ore.
- Some 5,000 years after the founding of the kingdom of Cin’Dar (approx. 650 PR), the gargantuan soralide crystal, Liladan’s Heart, was discovered, refined and installed in Ezdin. Its magical power enhanced the already formidable Cin'Dar sky navy, solidifying the nations power on a global scale.
- Around this time, the Kan’Tahri monarchy was reshaped in to a plutocratic republic, forming the Cin'Dar Senate.
- The Legionius Nauticus is it is named today was created shortly after the senate, as an independent force from the now largely defunct wet navy.
- A statue of her first Grand Navarch (Grand Admiral) Hironimus Marcellus stands in the senate chamber within the floating halls of Artan’s Haven, alongside the statues of the founding Decimus and the first Legionius Aurelius Prime Marshall Claudian Aquilis.
